The Spanish Association of Professionals of Funeral Services (AESPROF) has produced a report in which it maintains that the real number of deaths from coronavirus in Spain from March 14 to May 25 is 43,985. This is a figure 56.6% higher than that recognized by the Ministry of Health, which for that period only admits the death of 28,109 patients, or 15,876 fewer deaths.

The report, entitled 'Study of Real Mortality in Spain due to the Coronavirus Pandemic', includes, according to their authors, what they call the deceased "Covid-19 suspects" collected both in nursing homes, homes and hospitals, "already that in the first weeks there were no screening tests.

AESFROD claims that the study has been conducted based on data from funeral staff, civil and forensic registries, forensic doctors, pathologists, and legal medicine institutes. The group also stresses the "anonymity" of its sources "due to the extremely important pressures to which they are being subjected" by the administration.

According to the data from the funeral homes, the greatest lags between the official and the "real" figures have occurred in Madrid (with 16,579 deaths compared to the 8,949 recognized), Catalonia (with 12,125 versus 6,035), Castilla-La Mancha ( with 3,393 deaths compared to 2,925 scored) and Castilla y León (2,412 compared to 1,961 officials),

The report, in which according to its authors more than 250 professionals from the sector have participated, has the "sole purpose" of "shedding light" on "the number of deaths that the sars-cov virus has actually taken. The funeral directors claim that in Spain "from the start of the pandemic until today", the "disparity in statistical criteria for accounting for the deceased without following specific traceability" has made it impossible to record real figures.
