Sumar will present its tax proposal to the Congress of Deputies on Wednesday to increase taxes on tourist apartments and thus reduce the profitability of this type of rental.
The proposal that Sumar is putting forward in the form of a non-law proposition is for holiday rentals to pay 21% VAT , sources from the parliamentary group have confirmed to EFE.
Currently, tourist accommodations that do not provide complementary services considered as hotels do not have to declare VAT, since rental income is not considered to be derived from an economic activity, but from real estate capital .
They also do not pay corporate tax or personal income tax, which Sumar proposes to change.
According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), in 2023 Spain registered 340,424 tourist homes, a record figure that represented an increase of 9% compared to the previous year.
By February 2024, the figure had risen to 351,389, almost 70% of which were located in Andalusia, the Valencian Community, Catalonia and the Canary Islands, since the Mediterranean coast and the islands concentrate the supply.
