51.8 % of Lanzarote residents are in favour of the introduction of a tourist tax, according to the latest Survey of Habits and Socioeconomic Confidence (ECOSOC) published by the Canary Islands Statistics Institute (ISTAC).
Tourist tax is an additional charge applied to visitors during their stay in a tourist destination. The implementation and use of this tax may vary depending on local policies and the specific needs of each destination.
In contrast, 21.8% of respondents in Lanzarote were against the introduction of such a tax. 23.9% said they were not sure and 2.5% did not know how to answer.
Lanzarote is the island in the archipelago that is most in favour of introducing the tax. The percentage of Lanzarote residents in favour of a tourist tax is 7.5 points higher than the average in the Canary Islands , where 43.3% are in favour and 24% are against.
The second island with the highest number of people in favour of its introduction is Tenerife , where 49% were in favour. It is interesting to note that in the metropolitan area of Tenerife the percentage in favour of the tax rises to 54.3% .
Next in line was La Gomera (48.4%) , followed by Fuerteventura, where the number of people in favour of the tax reached 43.3% , Gran Canaria 35.8% , La Palma 33.7% and El Hierro 30.7% .
On all the islands there are more people in favour than against, except in El Hierro where the result is identical for both opinions. The highest percentages of people against the tax are found in Gran Canaria (30.2%) and in El Hierro (30.7%) .
