On August 27, 2024, La Voz  already published the news that a person was walking two owls in Costa Teguise. As a result of this event, the DEPRONA of the Civil Guard of Lanzarote received various reports where tourists and residents were taking photos with these animals.

For this reason, the Civil Guard, in collaboration with veterinarians from the municipality of Haría, have identified the owner and have acknowledged that she is the owner of the two birds and that she has documentation of them, confirming that they are two specimens of eagle owl (Bubo bubo). According to the documentation provided, they are two CITES specimens, one of them acquired after the entry into force of Law 7/2023, which prohibits their acquisition.

The owner states that the facilities are in her home, in her bedroom and that she is not registered in the Registry of zoological centres, and that she must have adequate facilities as established in art. 34 of Decree 117/1995, of May 11, which approves the Regulation of Law 8/1991, of April 30, on the Protection of Animals and develops other aspects related to them, establishes its obligation.
In light of this statement, the veterinarian has determined that, based on Article 20 of Law 8/1991, the animals are to be confiscated due to the lack of adequate facilities for them, in order to ensure their well-being , and has drawn up a record of the facts.

The animals have been deposited at Rancho Texas at the disposal of the competent authority for the resolution of the administrative file and the complaint has been sent to the Department of Livestock and the Town Councils of Teguise and Haría.
