Shock. That is the word that best describes the incident that occurred at the Casa de Los Arroyo, headquarters of the Biosphere Reserve. Juan Baztán, one of the professors who participated in the MICRO International Congress, which is being held at the Atlántida Multicines in Arrecife, has died after a fall inside the building. The exact causes of the accident are still unknown.
The National Police have taken over the investigation to clarify this tragic outcome. The deceased was a professor at the University of Bordeaux, who was with other members of the organisation inside the building. According to initial reports, the professor suffered a fall from a height of approximately two metres, apparently in the area of the stairs.
The news of the professor's death spread quickly among the participants and attendees at the conference, causing a great impact. The incident occurred at around 6:00 p.m., when the emergency services were alerted. Despite their rapid intervention, they were unable to do anything to save his life.
The Cabildo of Lanzarote expresses its condolences
The President of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancor, on behalf of the island Corporation, has expressed his pain and desolation at the death of the member of the Scientific Committee organizing the five editions of the International MICRO Conference by the University of Versailles, Juan Baztán. Condolences to the family have been extended to the world scientific community, which has lost one of its most committed, passionate and wise figures.
The co-founder of the Marine Sciences For Society network, in collaboration with the Lanzarote Biosphere Reserve, was the seed of the island's commitment to the fight against plastic pollution and the driving force behind the Congresses that have been held to bring together research in this area, the last of which ended on Friday afternoon.
Their work over the past two decades has been and will be a fundamental pillar for advancing a new United Nations Treaty to combat plastic pollution, which could materialize in the coming months.
