The president of the Canary Association of Vacation Rentals (Ascav), Doris Borrego, said on Tuesday that this sub-sector will be "essential" to start the tourist recovery in the Canary Islands in the face of the "phobia" that hotels can generate among tourists.

Any Central European or tourist is going to prefer a vacation home rather than being crowded into a hotel with lots of customers, common areas, meals they have to share and different nationalities, there may be the phobia," she tells Europa Press.

In addition, she maintains that holiday homes in the Canary Islands provide "more security at all levels" than in those countries.

According to the first estimates of the association, the accumulated losses until the end of April reach 156 million euros due to cancellations and with an impact on employment that exceeds 15,000 people.

However, and although she admits that the health crisis has "devastated" the entire tourism sector, she points out that as of May cancellations have slowed to just under 50% and clients have also proposed to change the dates. "They prefer to postpone than to cancel," she says.

"If there are no flights or the situation is serious, it is useless to open because we are not going to have planes and clients but we have the advantage that a client would prefer to come to a vacation home at first than go to a hotel".

Ascav also claims "the same conditions and aid" should be given as any other hospitality sector and criticizes that "the hotel sector is being given priority when the large chains have had very good years and significant profits."
